Steps to Inner Balance
a workbook
"Steps to Inner Balance" is a practice which when applied
to your life, brings Loving-Kindness and increased light to the inner self.
The core of this practice is a simple method of forgiving, releasing (detaching from people, places and things) and Love for all life. Through forgiving and releasing, we begin to remove
the boundaries within which separate us from being our "True"
self, who is love and oneness.
Through the practice of
release (dis-attachment), we begin to free ourselves from the things that tie
down our spirit and stop our ascension to our true home. By giving Love to all beings you receive Life's blessing, contentment.
As
we release our self-imposed blocks, love flows more freely through us,
nourishing the natural landscape of our being. As this loving nature
grows, we come to realize that all creation is existing through love and kindness which flows and is the one source. All we must do at any moment is to accept and give
love. On this simple path, all effort is directed towards learning to
surrender every moment to Love and to release others from our grip. We have to love everyone.

"With
visible breath I am walking.
A
voice I am sending as I walk.
In a sacred manner I am walking.
With
invisible tracks I am walking.
In a sacred manner I walk."
From "The Song of White Buffalo
Calf Woman"
LOVE
All
austerities, worship, knowledge and contemplation are useless without
love, and a practitioner without love remains devoid of any knowledge
of God's mysteries. Various paths have been prescribed for meeting
the Lord, but love is supreme and is the very life of all methods.
God is love and therefore the best method of meeting God is through
love. In fact all practices are for the very purpose of awakening
love. Your family life, your business transactions or other activity
will bring happiness and all comfort, even if one particle of love
is mixed with them.
TRUTH
Every
path is true.
As a child in the first grade requires a different level of education
from a student in a university -- a similar progression of understanding
occurs on the spiritual path. However, in both secular and spiritual
situations, some students progress at an "average" rate,
some are held back, some students skip grades and some rare achievers
may graduate at ten years old.
Furthermore,
the amount of money spent on classes, books, tapes and seminars bear
no direct relation to a person's attainments; nor do education or
intellect. The illiterate, poor, and the homeless have the same capacity
to attain Loving-Kindness and God-Realization as the wealthy.
WHAT IS THE MIND?
The
mind is a complex tool designed to help us manage the physical level
of existence. Mind is a self-programming bio-etheric computer, which
processes knowledge and experience It receives, stores, and retrieves
information for continuous use. This powerful tool is sparked to life
by the real "You", Soul, who channels the energy that comes
from God and enables this complex bio-etheric system to operate. The
senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell & esp) are input devices
which continually update this system with our ongoing experience.
Our output is the moment-by-moment response
to life, mentally & physically, however we express ourselves.
For
many individuals, the mind and the body -- instead of being viewed
as mere tools -- are perceived to be the entire individual or self.
This dilemma is illustrated by the scuba diver who must wear a wet
suit and aqua-lung to survive in the depths of the ocean.
Though
the scuba diver is much more than just his equipment, he must wear
the device to interface with the foreign, undersea environment. The
diver is aware that he is not the suit, and -- because of this knowledge
-- is able to utilize it to his advantage. Similarly, we wear a body
and utilize a mind to exist and interact in this physical reality;
however, we have become so dependent on these devices that we believe
they constitute all we are!
This
identification of the mind and body as the total self limits the level
at which one comprehends experience. The mind is confined by its machine-like
nature.-- it can only process input experience, while using it's past
memories as the basis for the current moments' response. By comparison,
the soul -- being plugged into Loving-Kindness -- is pure, unlimited
power. This in-the-moment awareness determines to what extent you
are captive to your mind's manipulations and projections. Remember,
however, that every stage of awareness is perfectly designed to serve
each individual's growth into Oneness and Loving-Kindness.
LIFE IS A PROGRAM (A Karmic Program)
Throughout
history, most religions have taught that a person undergoes pain or
pleasure as a result of his own previous action. Likewise, he bears
the consequences of present actions, immediately after the initial
action or in the future. Thus, it has been advised to "do unto
others as you would have them do unto you." This law of cause
and effect operates throughout the universe through physics. This
theory is known as the Law of Compensation: "As you sow, so shall
you reap". It is also referred to as Karma.
Your
individual life has a built-in Karmic program that began before you
were born. You can say that you chose this life's lessons to occur
in this particular way, for in fact you did, through your past actions.
This program predetermined the mundane and social aspects of your
life: your parents, whether you receive love or abuse, your nationality,
religious upbringing, skin color, mental and physical defects (if
any), hair and eye color, bone structure, etc. Each individual is
governed separately by his own complex Karmic formula.
The
word Karma means "to act" or "to do". Everything
we think, say or do is in fact, Karma. In colloquial terms, people
speak of "good" or "bad" Karma. If an individual
is unaware, Karma is interpreted with worldly definitions; for instance,
winning the lottery automatically constitutes "good Karma "while
breaking a leg must be "bad Karma".
In
truth, "good" Karma is any action that causes us to realize
our spiritual nature and walk toward God. "Bad" Karma is
any event that causes us to turn away from our true selves and walk
away from God; for example, breaking a leg is good Karma if by it
forces us to reflect on our good fortune of still being alive activating
thankfulness and causes us to think of God, and winning a million
dollars is bad Karma if it causes us to ignore God by chasing material
objects and by putting too much emphasis on money, power, vanity,
egoism or the like. Our reaction to Karmic events is determined by
our general perspective and awareness at that moment. When we finally
accept both "good" and "bad" events as happening
for our greater good, and we remain focused on our inner way home
any event becomes "good" Karma.
THE ILLUSION OF SEPARATION
Separation
is the mind-based illusion by which most of humankind live their lives.
To illustrate this situation, fill a large bowl with water and observe
it for a moment. Notice that all the water is indeed one.
Now,
get a plastic baggie and, with a teaspoon, remove a small amount
and place in the baggie. Seal the baggie and place it back in
the bowl of water. |
|
Now,
the water in the baggie is no longer one with the rest of the water.
Though it originated in oneness with the rest of the water, and is
indeed the same as the rest of the water, it is trapped by the baggie
and is unable to merge into the original Oneness.
This, in basic terms, is our dilemma.
We are a bunch of baggies filled with water in a bowl filled with
water. The baggies represent each individual's mind, body, and senses
-- that part of ourselves on which we have placed the greater part
of our attention. The water that fills and surrounds the baggies represents
love. Accordingly, we are filled with and surrounded by love, but
are distracted from this fact by placing all of our attention on our
minds, bodies and senses. Our protective attention on our physical
baggie (our body) keeps God's love out while our individual love reservoir
remains weak, limited, confined and separate.
Now take these clear baggies and
color them with the red color of anger, the black color of greed,
the green of attachment, the yellow of egotism. Now, the oneness in
love becomes completely invisible to us and we feel, not love, but
the fear that comes from the experience of separation. The color of
our individuality keeps us from seeing the purely spiritual content
of our fellow bags. Although we are all filled with love, we focus
on the color and size of our fellow souls' bags and unfortunately
judge and compare accordingly, thereby increasing and magnifying the
illusion of separation.
This
bag in which we have our being must be first become clear and later
may be transcended for us to experience the knowing that each of us
is a facet and truly a part of our creator. Thus, we must replace
the fear which accompanies separation with the knowledge that we are
truly one with all things. If we pursue this effort, ultimately we
will experience -- with increasing frequency and continuity -- Love
and Oneness with God and all creation.
FORGIVENESS and FORGETTING
There
can be no spiritual progress without forgiveness. It is only through
complete forgive-ness that we burn-off the crust through which we
view and experience the world, ourselves, others, and God. Just as
you can't enjoy drinking fresh clean water from a glass filled with
mud, you cannot experience the love of God if your heart is filled
with worries, anxiety and distasteful recurring memories. Lack of
forgiveness causes us to project our past fear, mistrust, and hurt
on every fresh new relationship. We become unable to have a loving
and honest relationship or have a clear playing field. We mistrust
until the other person proves worthy. Do we ever ask or look within
ourselves to see if what we judge in others is a mental or emotional
projection of our own issues? If not, then we must, because no conception
of thought occurs first outside. It must first form as an opinion
fueled by our unforgiveness, which is why we are doomed to repeat
lessons until they are truly done and forgotten.
Forgetting is imperative to complete
forgiveness. As long as the memory of injury is still imprinted in
our minds, we will relive the event emotionally, experiencing once
again those feelings of fear, anger, greed, worry and frustration.
The return of these feelings acts to remind us that we have not fully
forgiven ourselves or others we believe caused us injury. We must
wipe the mind clean of bitter thoughts by forgiving and forgetting
and then actively fill that space with thoughts of Loving-Kindness
toward the object of our forgiveness. The exercises in this book are
designed to help do just that.
ACTORS ALL
Shakespeare
spoke truthfully when he uttered those famous words: "the world
is a stage, and we are but actors". In fact, we are not only
actors, but each one of us is the leading actor in our own drama of
self-discovery. The remaining cast of characters enter and exit on
cue -- the karmic cue. The plot is perfectly orchestrated. All things
happen how and when they are supposed to happen, not a second sooner
or later.
This
life is a play of which God is the director and sometimes puppet-master.
As we observe our fellow actors, some seem to play the parts of heroes
and others appear to be villains. Yet remember that all are playing
out their own leading roles of self-discovery. Our responsibility
is simply to play to the good side of our individual parts to the
best of our ability. Our only responsibility is to focus all of our
past experience and awareness on doing the best in whatever role we
have been given. Of course it goes without saying that that is precisely
what we are doing.
Just
imagine attending a Broadway play where instead of playing their assigned
roles, all of the actors stand around criticizing each other and yelling
about how badly the other is playing his or her part! The director
would undoubtedly be very upset! Fortunately, God, our personal director,
only exercises love, mercy, and forgiveness towards us, his actors,
who do this very thing.
PRACTICE
Practice
of new enlightening precepts requires the conscious effort to discipline
the mind. Virtually any effort to learn a new thing requires repeated
practice, such as playing a musical instrument or learning to be doctor.
So does learning to Love unconditionally. The simple teachings of
love, truth, the nature of mind, transcendence, forgiveness and self-focus
are no good if they remain in theory as mere mental concepts and ideals.
We can read a cookbook all day long but we cannot eat thoughts. We
must make the conscious effort to prepare the meal. The following
exercises are designed to aid the practitioner in experiencing the
reality described by the concepts discussed in this book.
LIFE CURRENT
Life-Current,
Ch'i, Reiki, Qi, Prana, Vital Force and Love are all different words
for the same thing. Namely, the underlying and unifying power of life:
God-in-action, or in-vibration. This energy is life itself. For our
purposes we will call this energy "life-current". The life-current
originates with God, permeates the soul, flows down to the mind, and
manifests as the emotional, finally solidifing as the physical body.
Life-current can also be consciously enhanced and directed for healing
purposes. Life-current is in and sustains every atom, every cell,
and every organ. It gives form to every object (animate and inanimate)
and comprises not only our body, mind and soul but it is also the
space between our seeming individuality. These are not empty words
requiring faith. These truths have been scientifically proven in the
theory of Quantum physics. In reality there is no space only finer
and finer God (life) in motion or vibration.
While
in the body, the first step to mastering the flow of our life-current
is to become aware of it. Even though we have our being in this flow,
like a fish in water, most of us do not realize our total dependence
on GodÕs power, this current. But when that fortunate "good-karma"
day comes and we discover how to accept Love in awareness from the
One Creator, our spiritual progress is accelerated and we are moved
to greater and greater heights of Love-Consciousness.
In summary, all that exists is
God. Our personal vision of the world is our individual realization
& view of God. Our relationship with the world is our relationship
with God. Everything has soul, love and the spark of the divine. Our
moment-to-moment awareness determines the level at which we realize,
experience and know this truth. This is the very essence of all spiritual
teachings. Everything contains God and God contains all and everything.
Therefore, we simply must learn to walk in a sacred way so that everything
we think, say or do while playing our individual parts projects this
concept. Like the wings of a bird, Grace from God, and our individual
effort, discipline and patience are all that is required for us to
achieve the flight toward true freedom and love.
THE CHAKRAS OR ENERGY
CENTERS
The
word chakra means "whirling wheel". When seen clairvoyantly,
each chakra appears to be several wheels rotating within a larger wheel.
Each chakra is comprised of spinning vortexes, the number of which depends
upon the function and nature of the specific chakra. Chakras are the
energy centers of the mental, physical, and emotional bodies, acting
as gathering, storing, and pumping stations for the life-current. The
chakras work in conjunction and in series with one another. What affects
one may in one way or another affect another.
The
life-current permeates, & enters the subtle body network through the
crown and base chakras, as well as through the breath. This works similar
to plugging in any appliance to an electrictal outlet so that it may
fuction. As long as the body is plugged in, it is alive. The soul on
the other hand is always plugged in and alive, it never dies.
As the chakras spin they distribute
the electromagnetic-love force or life-current throughout the body through
pipeor transmission lines that are also called meridians. As sometimes
happens with household plumbing, our electromagnetic pipelines can become
clogged. These meridians often become blocked with emotional waste --
repressed feelings and unfulfilled expectations -- sometimes causing
a total breakdown of our life-current supply. For plumbing problems,
we call a plumber; for meridian problems, we visit an acupuncturist,
a Reiki practitioner, a Yoga class or a massage therapist to unclog
the system so that the energy can flow freely again. In severe conditions
the blockage is manifested physically to the extent that we require
surgery or other drastic measures to prolong or ensure physical life.
The goal of the following meditative
and visualization exercises is preventive. They are designed to fortify
each chakra with Loving-Kindness while balancing them in relationship
to each other. This results in a healthier condition and control of
the mind, emotions and physical body. While increased vibrancy and increased
awareness are a by-product of this practice, the main purpose is to
prepare our total being to discern, accept and carry out God's will
as it is designed individually for each one of us.
The
Chakras and their various functions are:
Crown
Chakra: located
at the top of the head; governs the unified administration of the physical,
spiritual and mental bodies; when developed expansion of consciousness
is increased, along with understanding, Oneness and all other universal
attributes.
Mind/Third
Eye Chakra: Located
in the exact center of the head; governs mental activity; when developed
one attains spiritual discrimination, watchfulness, pure thoughts and
dis-attachment from the physical plane of existence.
Throat
Chakra: Located
in the center of the neck; governs vocalization, motion of the tongue
and respiration; when developed, intellectual and logical expression
are evident as well as artistic expression.
Heart
Chakra: Located in the center of the sternum or breast bone;
governs the heart, circulation of body fluid, respiration and digestion;
stores all past life memory; when developed the higher feelings of compassion,
Loving-Kindness, joy, forgiveness, and harmlessness toward all life
forms are pronounced.
Solar
Plexus Chakra: Located behind the navel; governs the stomach, spleen, pancreas, liver,
gall bladder, and kidneys; when developed emotional balance, balance
of physical movement and contentment are experienced.
Sacral
Chakra: Located
behind the pubic bone; governs reproductive systems, sexuality and the
functions of both the large and small intestines; when developed physical
vitality and confidence are obvious.
Base (Root)
Chakra: Located at the base of the spine, pointing toward the
earth; governs function of the bladder and rectum, elimination in all
forms, and assists the reproductive system; when developed, physical
harmony with the earth and adaptability to the environment are attained.
SPIRITUAL EXERCISES & PRACTICE
For
thousands of years meditation has been used to control the mind and
focus the direction of its tendencies. One advantage of controlling
the mind is that we actually begin to feel that there is something beyond
the mind, and that thing is soul. This experience of transcendence aids
us in placing our mind's will in service of the soul's will and eventually
in God's Will.
The following spiritual exercises
have been selected from the myriad of techniques developed by meditation
practitioners thousands of years ago, many of which are still in world-wide
practice today. They are very simple, and may be practiced daily for
the purpose of habituating the mind and increasing life-current flow
in the body.
Throughout
each and every exercise we place firmly in our minds the fact that this
life-sustaining current we breathe-in is God's essence, Loving-Kindness.
To begin, find a quiet space where
you can relax without interruption. This place may become a sanctuary
as you use it on a continual basis for the sacred purpose of infusing
your entire being with Loving-Kindness. Place yourself in a sitting
position, with your back straight on a chair or on the floor.
Take time to find a position in
which you may sit comfortably for a minimum of a half hour.
Please Note: Do these exercises
slowly, do not rush. and most importantly find a rhythm that is comfortable
to you.
The
first excercise is to balance the energy. The next is for grounding.
Continue the excercises in order, which progress from the bottom chakra
to the top crown chakra. You will notice with practice that the energy
current will begin moving upward. When you get to your head you will
feel great and feelings of contentment will arise.
BASE (Root)
CHAKRA EXCERCISE
The
purpose of this exercise is to increase our connectedness with the earth
energy source which nurtures us, gives us a base to live on and provides
food and water, sustaining the temple of our being through Her Loving-Kindness.
We can begin by recognizing this
power with the following or similar prayer or proceed directly to the
exercise.
"Earth
Mother, teach me to walk in a sacred manner".
1) Begin breathing slowly and deeply.
2)
Feel the nurturing energy come from the Earth up our spine and
out the top of our heads in a fountain of light.
3)
Mentally repeat the following words mentally or out loud once
with each inhalation:
"I
Am Loving-Kindness".
|
|
4)
Continue this exercise for three minutes or longer.
5)
Relax for a few seconds then go on to the next exercise.
SACRAL CHAKRA EXCERCISE

pubic bone.
5)
Push the abdomen out while inhaling through the nose.
|
|
6)
While inhaling, visualize the life-current flowing into your nose
down through your lungs and out your second chakra toward your hands.
Then see it flow up to the top of your head coming full circle. Exhale
through your mouth or nose whichever is most comforable.
7)
Mentally repeat the following words once with each inhalation:
"I Share
Loving-Kindness "

7)
Relax for a few seconds repeat the process or go on to the next process
Congratulations!
You have just completed the first part of "The Steps to Inner
Balance", My advice is to do these first exercises for 10 days
before moving on to the next section. The reason is that gaining a
comfort level with the first exercises will enhance your ability to
accept the next steps into your being. As for myself these steps were
given to me over a period of weeks giving me time to absorb them.
I practiced the first steps until they became second nature, that
is, I was conscious of doing them all the time.
I
suggest that you read through the next steps so you are familiar with
the entire practice. The steps in part 2 can also be developed to
become second nature.
FORGIVING
& RELEASING
The
following exercises are not meant to replace person to person dialog,
but rather to work in conjunction with it. There is no replacement for
face to face resolution in an open discussion providing that anger,
blaming and shaming are replaced by accepting responsibility and changing
ones behavior patterns, thereby entering a state of transformation.
Of course one can only try and make an effort toward this end. I know
from my own experience that some issues with people are easy to resolve
when done in-the-moment. Most problems are based on understanding and
respecting anothers' viewpoint. Each person with his/her own system
of dialog accepts information in a specific way. Each person must make
an effort to listen to what is actually being said. Understanding and
respecting do not mean that you must agree.
I have found that most problems are easily resolved if one confronts
the issue as quickly as it happens with the ego aside. Deal with it
then, if you can, otherwise the further one gets from the moment the
harder to resolve.
Most
issues deal with a power struggle or attachment to an idea left over
from a past association, not necessarily from this life. Remember each
one of us is a bundle of tendencies working toward unconditional love.
That is the hardest thing to focus on. Rather than to judge a person,
instead repeat "Everyone is a struggling soul."
You can't change another persons tendencies but you can work on your
own.
Resolution
Begins by Dealing With the Past
Past experience often haunts us needlessly, controlling our decisions
with fear. We can eliminate the useless past -- any associations which
are not motivated by pure love -- and move onto a present filled with
Loving-Kindness that contains all the positive and negative lessons
learned from past experience. In the following meditation we will wipe
the mind clean of negative associations related to particular people,
places and events by forgiving and forgetting. Then we will actively
refill that void with thoughts of Loving-Kindness.
After you have practiced the basic life-current exercises begin to work
on forgiving and forgetting. Sit in your meditation posture. Center
your attention on your Heart Chakra, by placing your hands one over
the other on the center. Breath deeply and calmly through your Heart.
1) Let
your mind drift to a memory which evokes painful emotions. Visualize
the event as clearly as possible.
2) Picture
the key person whom you believe caused you pain. Recall key words
or phrases exchanged during the episode.
3) Now,
while holding this image, mentally or out loud, say "I honestly
forgive you for all I believe you have done to me. I completely
forgive myself for feeling anger (insert here whatever the feeling
is) toward you. You are God's essence, and made of the same Love
as myself. All is forgiven, all is forgotten." |
It
must be noted here that it is always better to ask the person you feel
you have wronged for honest forgiveness if physically possible. It may
be embarrassing and painful, but personally asking cleanses faster and
more completely. However it is essential that it be done in a honestly
humble a way as possible. The impersonal method described here works
well but requires more effort.
4) Now
visualize the event exploding into light and picture the images
replaced by the word "LOVE."
5) Recall
the same event again and repeat the sequence until you cannot
recall it.
6) I personally
image a TV set with a large delete button alongside which I mentally
press.
|
The
more firmly the emotion is fixed in your mind, the harder it is to remove.
But don't give up; keep working at it. It will be gone after a few honest
attempts. There is no need to begin with complex events. Start with
small ones until you master this simple process. By eliminating the
negative thoughts and fears of the past we can truly live in the present
with an open heart.
ONENESS
& DIS-ATTACHMENT
Have
you ever seen ten appliances plugged into one outlet? Sometimes too
many concerns and worries are plugged into our life energy and soon
we don't have enough to power our own needs and we blow a fuse. When
we pay too much attention to a worry we can overdraw our psychic account
and we can be left feeling empty and depleted.
The
following practice enables us to actively regroup our out pouring power
back to within ourselves. This power is really God's attention focused
in this point of time/space that we call ourselves. Our attention connects
us to people, places, objects and events. Whether we know it or not,
we are connected to everything we think about. As we pull back more
and more of our attention to ourselves, our spiritual focus increases.
We are not doing this exercise to withdraw love from our relationships;
rather, the intention of this technique is to conserve this precious
power so that we can focus it most effectively every moment. After the
practice you may love even more powerfully, secure in the knowledge
that God is taking care of all.
1) Relax
in your posture completely. Close your eyes
2) Watch
your energy stream out into the world until it reaches a person,
object, place or event which is important to you. This connection
can be seen as a ribbon(s) of golden light.
3) When
you can see this ribbon of light connected to the object of your
attention, reach out in your mind with two fingers and dis-attach
the ribbon of light from its object, returning the energy to yourself.
4) Repeat
untill all ribbons have returned to within you. |
This
is a simple technique that works. It can be used throughout your day
as you -- the main character in your life drama -- walk from scenario
to scenario. As each scene completes and we leave the people, places
and objects associated with that scene behind, we dis-attach ourselves
from them, bringing our total focus into this moment. This new reservoir
of faith increases present awareness which automatically improves our
effectiveness and focus at whatever we are called to do in each moment.

Hearts Meditation
Meditation
on the Twin Hearts is a form of service to the creation. This exercise
helps to connect us with our divine purpose and path, bringing us more
in harmony with all life. It increases the knowledge and experience
that we are truly one with God.
"Twin
Hearts" refers to the heart and crown chakras when used in unison.
The crown chakra is the center of illumination and divine love or Oneness
with all. In other words, God focuses his love towards us through this
center. The heart chakra is our individual love center and through here
our love is projected individually in the creation. The heart chakra
is the center for compassion, joy, affection, consideration, mercy,
and other refined emotions.
This
exercise can be done with eyes closed, or open.
1)
Place one hand upon the top of your head and the other upon your heart.
This aligns the two centers and helps you to concentrate simultaneously
on the crown and the heart.
2)
Now cover your heart chakra with one palm over the other and centering
your attention on the energy flow, bless the world with the following
invocation, or improvise as suits you:
Forgiveness
for Ones-self
The
greatest single thing you can do for yourself.is that you can begin
everyday first asking God's forgiveness, then you can forgive yourself,
If you have injured or hurt someone's feelings ask them for forgiveess
as soon as possible. If resolution will not come easily, try again,
you may be surprised. We are in state of perpetual transformation always
moving in and upward. Remember that there are no mistakes only growth.
